STEAM ERAWestern Pacific: The First 50 Years |
||||
|
The first half-century of the Western Pacific is documented in surprising detail in this two hour show. From an extraordinary collection of archival films, we take a ride through time, beginning with the first trains to enter the Feather River Canyon in 1909, and continuing with a trip aboard the 1926 Scenic Limited. Following building of the "highline", there is coverage of the road struggling through the depression-era thirties. Steam's postwar finale appears in color coverage of 0-6-0s to 2-8-8-2s. These give way to diesel power in the shape of flashy green and yellow FTs and other first generation diesels, covering most pre-1960 models. Along the way, WP's subsidiaries, steam rotary #3 in action on the "highline"; other M/W equipment, detours, wrecks and WP's SF Bay "navy" are featured. The luxurious California Zephyr was WP's crown jewel. It is shown from its inaugural run, and many interior scenes show what life aboard this elegant train was like during its scenic passage between Oakland, California, and Salt Lake City, Utah.Venerable ten-wheeler #94 stars in the railroad's 50th Anniversary celebration, which concludes this saga of the West's "favorite little railroad". Railfans and historians alike will be fascinated by this nostalgic retrospective spanning the golden era of American railroads.
